Patrick Carpentier is selected as a finalist source: CART.com With over 2.3 million fans already streaming through the gates this year, it can be argued that the CART FedEx Championship Series is the most popular open-wheel racing series in North America. However, there are always favorites among favorites and a year-long vote has yielded five finalists for the WorldCom Most Popular Driver Award, with the winner to be announced at the season-ending CART banquet in Miami on November 22. Series champion Cristiano da Matta (#1 Havoline Toyota/Lola/Bridgestone), two-time race winner Patrick Carpentier (#32 Player's/Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Reynard/Bridgestone), Milwaukee winner Paul Tracy (#26 KOOL Honda/Lola/Bridgestone), Long Beach winner Michael Andretti (#39 Motorola Honda/Lola/Bridgestone) and three-time race winner Dario Franchitti (#27 KOOL Honda/Lola/Bridgestone) have been chosen as the finalists in a year-long ballot by Champ Car fans. Fans cast their votes via hand-written ballots, internet voting and at voting kiosks at the track. The winner of the fan voting will receive a $25,000 check from WorldCom, which will be donated to the charity of his choice. Additionally, one lucky fan will be chosen from those that cast ballots to actually award the grand prize to the winner at the CART banquet, to be held at Miami's Hotel Intercontinental.
