Canadians Win the 2009 Shell Eco-marathon Americas!

Distance, not speed, was the goal this weekend on the track at the 2009 Shell Eco-marathon Americas, an event held at the Auto Club Speedway in Southern California on April 15-18, 2009. In this challenge, University and High School students design, build and test fuel-efficient vehicles that travel the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel. And this year Canadians took first prize!

  • Here is NTF 3.0, the "Prototype" of the Laval University Alerion Supermileage team that made an astonishing fuel consumption of 1,172.2 km per liter!
  • The Laval University Alerion Supermileage team from Québec City came out on top with an astonishing fuel consumption of 1,172.2 km per liter (0,0853 liter/100 km) with their vehicle, NTF 3.0, in the "Prototype" category.
  • Laval University prepares for their winning run at the 2009 Shell Eco-marathon Americas challenge.
  • Team Sabia from Brazil won the "Design Award" with this vehicle, Sabia 6, the design of which was inspired by a classic Bugatti and... Iron Man!
  • The Nova Scotian team from Dalhousie University won the "Communications Award" with their gasoline-engined Maritime Mileagemachine. The judges recognized the team's efforts for outstanding communications on the Shell Eco-marathon.
  • This could be the fuel tank of the future according to students competing at the 2009 Shell Eco-marathon Americas challenge. Many of the more than 500 students that competed from across North and South America used a similar size fuel tank that holds 250 mL.
