Toyota Highlander 4WD V6 Sport review - 2011 SUV comparison test
Saturday, September 24, 2011
Now here's an entrant none of us thought would be as high up on the list as it actually is. The Toyota Highlander turned out to be surprisingly able and quite satisfactory overall. And with the fastest 0-100 km time (7.3 sec), the shortest breaking distance (44m) and second-best fuel economy (13.18 L/100 km), it also turned out to be the most capable. So, how come it only managed to hit 4th place?

2011 7-seater SUV comparo match
Wednesday, August 31, 2011
As spring rolled in, our editorial team at the office got some great news: three members of our gang were going to be new, first-time parents. That got us thinking about family vehicles as two of the three began to consider a new set of wheels. Anticipating more kids in the future, the guys and gal came to one unanimous conclusion: No minivans!

2011 Toyota Highlander 4WD V6 Sport Review
Thursday, August 18, 2011
There are some vehicles on the market that might be lacking in refinement, practicality and eco-friendliness, but their alluring shape and extroverted character make them hard to resist. On the other hand, it's exactly the opposite for certain other vehicles. Case in point: the Toyota Highlander.

2011 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4WD-i Review
Tuesday, May 03, 2011
In February 2008 Toyota unwrapped the current generation of the Highlander at the Chicago show. The hybrid model had received an evolution of the heat engine used since 2001. But for 2011, the Highlander Hybrid inherits an all-new, more potent powertrain. Plus a facelift!

2011 Toyota Highlander 4WD Hybrid Review (video)
Thursday, February 24, 2011
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is currently the Japanese brand's only hybrid utility vehicle--and on the surface, it's an oxymoron and a half.

Do you really need all-wheel drive?
Thursday, December 02, 2010
I often hear or read automotive journalists praising the benefits of an all-wheel drive layout in a car or truck, and I agree; four wheels that manage engine power will always be more capable than two, especially on slippery surfaces.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid 1500 4x4 Review
Tuesday, September 08, 2009
As a former race car driver and current auto journalist, there are certain vehicles that I do not particularly look forward to trying out. Since a good old pick-up truck is not even remotely close to a race car, being handed the keys to one of these mastodons usually means that the week will be long and boring.

2009 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD Review
Tuesday, August 04, 2009
I'm a fan of compact to mid-size SUVs due to the any weather, any chore practicality they bring with ownership. People with active lifestyles find these vehicles to be indispensable however fuel consumption and environmental concerns have always been a killjoy of sorts but Ford is working to change that.

2009 Toyota Highlander 4WD V6 Sport Review
Sunday, August 30, 2009
The biggest thing about the Highlander is how it modifies the mood I'm in before I drive it. Getting in first thing in the morning (all press vehicles stay outside) can be a bit nippy in the spring before the snow melts. After the ignition, the first thing I do is to make sure the seat heaters are on and then I get out to scrape the windows. The seat heaters only work when you are sitting in them so this is more to make me feel good than anything else.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid Review (video)
Friday, April 24, 2009
GM's Two-Mode hybrid system may soon require a bigger trophy rack. In addition to positive reviews from media and customers, it's most recently been called the 'Best New Green Technology' by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada for 2009.

Driving all Fours
Thursday, January 08, 2009
It's a simple fact: drive all four of a vehicle's wheels, and the driver will experience a greater level of control and traction than with a standard two wheel drive alone. The added grip on the roads surface in any weather benefits confidence and peace of mind on any voyage- especially those taking place when the weather gets nasty.

2009 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD Review
Monday, March 30, 2009
I'm told this is 'the most fuel efficient SUV'. The 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid is definitely a competent vehicle, though its green technology only shines under certain driving conditions. My all-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid test vehicle trekked well on the West Coast through abnormal dumps of snow and sheets of ice, despite being fitted with just all-season tires (which, for 2009, have less rolling resistance).

2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid SLT Review
Tuesday, November 04, 2008
I find it hard to put the "fuel-efficient" label on a vehicle like the GMC Yukon just because it offers a hybrid powertrain. After all, this American mastodon, which weighs over two tons, does not really compare to a Prius, a Golf TDI or the upcoming 2010 Insight. I'm not opposed to big trucks. On the contrary, I believe they meet the needs of farmers and entrepreneurs more than any other type of vehicles.

2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid Review
Thursday, June 19, 2008
Now that's a pretty big statement for an automotive journalist to make, but trust me, it has nothing to do with my being in the back pocket of GM and them throwing me huge bundles of the folding stuff to make it (I wish!!!). It doesn't even have much to do with the overall feel of the vehicle, nor the number of bells and whistles which GMC has added to the Yukon for 09

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid Review
Friday, July 18, 2008
Remember when we weren't trained to think that $1.10 was a good price for a litre of gas? Ever stopped watching the readout on the pump after it counted past $100? Sworn you've heard your SUV belch contentedly after filling it up? You're not alone- and for thousands who require the service of a large truck or SUV, today's ludicrous fuel prices are an unfortunate fact of life.

2008 Ford Escape Hybrid 4WD Review
Friday, April 25, 2008
The practicality of a four-wheel-drive (4WD) SUV can be essential to many. It's certainly the vehicle of choice for my family given our regular ski sojourns and travels to the cottage, dog included. No other vehicle format provides sufficient cargo capacity, seating options and traction to fulfill the task quite as effectively. That said I've always felt self-conscious about driving such an ecologically detrimental rig as a daily commuter; and I always detest such behemoths when the gas pump runneth over, as in over what I can afford.

2008 Ford Escape Hybrid Road Test
Sunday, February 10, 2008
It seems as though hybrid vehicles are losing momentum. Technology enthusiasts and environment defenders already got theirs, while others are reluctant to jump on the bandwagon given how pricier these green vehicles are. What's more, the fuel efficiency benefits are far from meeting expectations.

2008 Toyota Highlander 4WD V6 Road Test
Sunday, February 03, 2008
At Toyota, there are now as many trucks in their lineup as there are cars. This scenario would've never been imagined 20 years ago. But, the customer is always right, and SUVs are selling more than ever, so the company is simply following the trend. The problem in their range of trucks is, however, that the models are rubbing elbows after each redesign. The RAV4 was all-new for 2006 and got bigger; the little SUV was marginally smaller than the old Highlander. And to add insult to injury, it was much more powerful with its 269-hp V6.

2008 Toyota Highlander Sport 4x4 Road Test
Thursday, December 06, 2007
Toyota's new-for-2008 Highlander SUV carries the family Toyota truck look while modernizing the popular model at the same time. In a market full of crossover look-alikes, it's nice to see something that stands out. The sport package equipped tester featured sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, special badging, and a few other body add-ons. It's all tough, rugged and masculine at first glance, and the front carries some scowling attitude which was missing from the last generation machine. A planted, solid stance is imparted from any angle.

2004 Toyota Highlander 4WD Road Test
Monday, June 07, 2004
I love kids and seem to find myself around them quite often. I don't have any of my own (yet), but to compensate I baby-sit. When I have a spare minute, or few hours, I take care of a few wonderful little monsters (munchkins). They are now old enough to know why every time I show up at their house I am driving a new car. They think this is "sooo cool" and therefore this makes me their favorite babysitter. But I am not the coolest babysitter because of the cars I drive, I also let them stay up late and eat lots of junk food.

Gone is the dash-mounted flower vase in the latest version of Volkswagen's Bug. Gone too is much of its cutesiness, replaced by a notable degree of sportiness intended to broaden the Beetle's target market by attracting male attention.
