The automotive press was never really kind to General Motors in regards to their compact-car offerings. At least, those sold in North America. Yes, we liked the Saturn Astra, but it was overpriced, wasn't available as a four-door sedan and was sold under a failing brand. The General's volume sellers, the Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire twins and Chevrolet Cobalt/Pontiac G5 twins, couldn't hold their own against the competition.

I've always had a fondness for good used hatchbacks -- in one form or another there's been one in my driveway for the past two decades. They're what I call "honest cars" - in contrast to the wallet-emptying, headache-inducing drama of my project cars, my daily-driver hatchbacks must fulfill a few key criteria: they must be fuel-sippingly frugal, have easily obtainable parts, and above all, be unfailingly reliable, never failing to turn over at 40 below, even when left for weeks on end in some godforsaken industrial lot while I drive that manufacturer's press cars.

Peering up at me on my front porch, nightgown clutched around her, was my elderly neighbour. "Lesley, there's something weird going on in your backyard." Reassuring her that it was merely a new hybrid car tucked in behind the house where it could safely re-charge, I apologized and turned back towards the warm comfort of my interrupted dreams.

A fraction of a minute is an eternity when you've got a black bear keeping pace with your tiny roadster, so close you could reach out and touch its shaggy hide. Fortunately, it wasn't the slightest bit interested in us, cutting in front and lumbering down the embankment to do whatever it is that bears do in the woods.

Tenerife, Spain. When you take a quick look at the 2012 C-Class, it would be very easy to say that only the rouge and lipstick had been changed. After all, only the front and rear fascias have been noticeably altered to make a sleeker (Cd of drag is down to 0.26), more powerful-looking car that is still distinctively a Mercedes. In between and underneath the front and back, components such as the hood, front fenders and door modules have been replaced with aluminum to reduce weight and improve fuel economy.
