As reported by Automotive News recently, Ford has no intentions on forcing this technology on US customers. Sad. Not that anyone should have anything stuffed down their throat but diesel is one of the most viable alternatives of the moment. Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president for global product development, made it very clear that Ford will continue to rely on their EcoBoost and hybrid technologies. Both very good. They will relegate the idea of importing diesel powertrains, although, as he said, it would be easy to do so. Then why say-so?

For 2009, BMW made a few changes to the entry-level 3-Series, both inside and out. Also, a new diesel engine will make its way into the lineup. Preserving the car's youthful personality, designers reworked the front bumper to include larger air intakes. The headlights have been revised, while the hood features two new character lines. In the back, the bumper, taillights (now LED-equipped) and part of the trunk lid have been restyled, making the vehicle look sharper and closer to the ground.

The Canadian government wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Last Wednesday, the House of Common passed a new bill to increase the availability of biofuels across the country. As a requirement, all gasoline sold in Canada will have to contain at least 5 percent ethanol by 2010. The latter is made from corn, which seems to be an interesting renewable source. However, ethanol can also come from other sources.

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas, which took place from April 10 to 13 at the California Speedway, in Fontana, allowed students from Canada, Mexico and the United States to showcase their skills in the development of extremely fuel-efficient vehicles. Students from Mater Dei High School, in Indiana, set a new mileage record this year. The goal of the competition was to see which car could drive the farthest while using the least amount of fuel possible. The new mark is 1,208.6 kilometers on a single liter of fuel. Actually, three teams broke the record set in 2007 by Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

As the main man behind the Chevrolet Volt project, Bob Lutz is clearly interested in developing new solutions to reduce our collective dependence on oil. But according to him, diesel is not the way of the future. "Environmental standards in America are too stringent, he said during a recent interview. For instance, the Tier II Bin 5 standard requires technical improvements that significantly increase the costs of producing clean diesels. We will obviously offer such engines to our customers, but we're not going to sacrifice any project because of this."

Mercedes continues its assault on the North American diesel market, which started back in 2006. The German automaker is launching a trio of new SUVs powered by the world's cleanest state-of-the-art diesel engine. The R320 BlueTEC, ML320 BlueTEC and GL320 BlueTEC all use the same V6 powerplant with Mercedes' BlueTEC system. The latter includes AdBlue injection, a technology that has been in place in Mercedes trucks and buses for a number of years. Thusly powered, these three new SUVs produce less greenhouse gas emissions; in fact, they meet the stringent Bin 5 standards applicable in North America. That will make things much more interesting at Mercedes dealerships starting this fall.
