Fisker to replace batteries in 2012 Karmas

Under the guise of enhanced "VIP Customer Care Coverage," Fisker has announced it will replace batteries in its 2012 Karmas. Its high-voltage battery supplier, A123 Systems, discovered a latent manufacturing defect in some prismatic cells made at its Livonia, Mich., facility that could result in underperformance and decreased durability.

The 2012 Fisker Karma is the latest addition to the growing list of new vehicles available in British Columbia that qualify under the Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) Point of Sale Incentive Program. The Karma, a battery electric vehicle with extended range, qualifies for a discount of up to $5,000 off the pre-tax sticker price when purchased or leased at a new car dealer in BC.

Like the Chevrolet Volt, the Karma is an extended-range vehicle that relies on 403 hp worth of battery power and a 260-hp gasoline engine that acts as a generator. The Fisker is much more exciting than the Volt, however, and according to autocar.co.uk, Fisker claims having secured 3,000 orders for the car.

One year after the launch of the Karma Concept, Fisker will unveil the production model at the 2009 NAIAS, in Detroit. The revolutionary Karma becomes the world's first premium sports sedan to use a hybrid powertrain. Performance promises to be outstanding with a 260-horsepower, 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine mated to 22.6-kW lithium-ion battery. Total output exceeds 400 horsepower (408) while accelerations from 0 to 100 km/h are completed in 5.8 seconds.
