2012 Mazda2 GS Review
Sunday, March 11, 2012
It's only the second year on the Canadian market for the Mazda2 subcompact, and somehow, it feels like it's been around for much longer. The fact that the latest generation of the 2 has been available overseas for a few years now probably has something to do with it. It got a lot of well-deserved attention, and rumours about its arrival in the US and Canada, which took three years to materialize, also contributed to building up our expectations.

2013 Lexus GS 450h First Impressions
Thursday, March 01, 2012
It's hard to believe we're lapping the famed Laguna Seca raceway in a car whose legacy was established on its ability to provide the ultimate in disconnect between road and driver. Not only that, but it's a hybrid to boot.

In their quest to have the new 2013 Lexus GS 350 sedan inextricably linked with all that's sublime and passionate, the company couldn't have chosen a better setting for its launch than a drive along the Monterey coastline ending in an exhilarating afternoon at Laguna Seca Raceway.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR Review
Tuesday, November 22, 2011
I felt like a traitor all week. As my Java Black Pearl '04 Subaru WRX sat sadly in my driveway and I pulled away in the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO GSR tester that was mine for the week, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt.

2011 Mazda MX-5 GS Review
Saturday, October 29, 2011
A lot has been written about the latest-generation Mazda MX-5. It's one of the few pure sports cars that remain affordable today, one that's not based on any other car and one that's been designed as a sports car from scratch.

2012 Buick Regal GS First Impressions
Monday, August 29, 2011
Years ago, I used to cover weekly cruise nights for the local newspaper. It was an enjoyable gig consisting of hours spent listening to endless stories from friendly old guys who owned Studebakers, Edsels and '57 Chevys.

Stick handling
Thursday, September 01, 2011
It didn't register until after I'd read the invitation to drive the new Buick Regal GS and closed the email, that the fine print at the bottom of the message read "the cars for this event are only available with MANUAL transmissions".

2012 Mazda5 GS Review
Monday, June 27, 2011
Mazda is one of those car companies who seem to do no wrong. From the Miata to the brand-new Mazda2, there's very little to complain about in the Mazda lineup. After all, the Mazda3 was among one of the best-selling cars in all of Canada in 2009-that's quite a title to hold. Even the flashy RX-8, which has its flaws, sees more love than hate.

2011 Lexus GS 350 AWD Review
Wednesday, June 15, 2011
With the amount of gravel and debris on our roads this spring, the AWD system in the GS kept wheel spin to a minimum and me on track. When I went out to play boy-racer on some of our dirtier interchanges, the AWD system along with traction control helped me stay on my chosen line regardless of how much fine sand was left on the road.

2011 Lexus GS 450h Review
Sunday, February 13, 2011
Driving a luxury hybrid seems to be a contradiction in terms, but if you stop and think about it, luxury cars can benefit from being a hybrid just as much, if not more than a small car. We already know that adding an electric motor to a fuel efficient engine results in a considerable improvement in fuel economy (and thus a reduced carbon footprint). The 450h carries that theme forward, in comfort.

2011 Mazda3 Sport GS Review
Tuesday, February 01, 2011
More than ever, the compact sedan segment is heating up. It's one of the most important battlefields in North America, especially in Canada, and the competition within the category is packed with new technology, improved finish, more fuel-efficient powertrains as well as aggressive pricing.

Subcompact comparison test
Tuesday, December 07, 2010
When several major manufacturers unleash a brand-new model in the same category, it's obvious that a comparison test is in order. After all, we all want to know which one's the best, right? Just about every automotive media outlet has or will publish a subcompact showdown, and here's ours.

2011 Mazda2 First Impressions
Friday, June 25, 2010
It's small, stylish and undeniably sporty. Yet, the all-new 2011 Mazda2 is by no means a racing machine, let alone a high-performance car. Rather, it wonderfully fills the role of a dynamic commuter.

2010 Mazda6 GS-I4 Comfort Review
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
No one should ever expect a Mazda6 to turn into a taxi. Seriously, that wouldn't make any sense...unless Queen Latifah's character from "Taxi" decides to trade her yellow Crown Vic for the popular Japanese athlete in a future movie, but even that seems far-fetched!

2009 Mazda MX-5 GS PRHT Review
Monday, November 02, 2009
I know you'd like to have a weekend car. The idea of having another vehicle sitting in the garage, whose sole mission is to provide smiles and happy times during those two precious weekly days off probably ranks high on your wish list. It does on mine.

2009 Lexus GS 450h Review
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
When we say the word 'hybrid', what vehicle instantly comes up in your mind? Toyota Prius? Honda Insight? Civic Hybrid, maybe? That's right; family-oriented fuel sippers that are created for those who have done the math and figured out that purchasing a hybrid will cost less to operate in the long run as well as those who want to show off their green conscience.

2010 Mazda3 GS Review
Monday, May 11, 2009
Mazda's compact 3 is currently the bestselling car so far this year. With good clearance deals on remaining 2009s, Canadian car buyers feel that although a brand-new model was about to hit showrooms, the old Mazda3 was still a good car.

2009 Mazda5 GS Review (video)
Wednesday, December 03, 2008
With a national average of just over 1.5 children per family, full-size minivans seem rather large for daily use. In a stroke of genius, Mazda has decided to bring the minivan down to a more palatable size, one that meets a family's real needs.

2009 Mazda6 GS-V6 Review
Monday, November 24, 2008
Since Honda decided a few years back that their mid-size Accord in North America should be different (read: bigger) than the one sold in the rest of the world, its rivals don't have much choice but to follow the same path.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR Review (video)

Canadian sports car enthusiasts have been blessed this year, as two new video game celebrities finally arrived in our market: the Nissan GT-R, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. We've been taking them on the tracks in such games as Gran Turismo, and now, we have a chance to park one in our garage.

2008 Lexus GS 460 Review (video)
Saturday, August 16, 2008
Lexus has just enhanced their GS sedan range with the new GS 460 model, slightly out-powering the GS 450h hybrid to claim top rank in the lineup. The 4.6-litre LS-derived V8 engine brings a notable power increase with it--generating 342 horsepower. That's an increase of 52 ponies over the optional 4.3-litre unit it replaces, which, interestingly, made less horsepower than the smaller 3.5-litre V6.

2008.5 Mazda3 GS Review
Monday, July 14, 2008
The Mazda3 is no longer new, yet its sales figures are far from slumping. Over the past few years, it's been the second-best selling compact car in Canada behind the Honda Civic but ahead of the Toyota Corolla. According to the rumor mill, a new generation of the Mazda3 will hit the market in 2010. That's still a long way from now. In the meantime, the automaker found a nifty way to maintain the interest of consumers by introducing an "updated" Mazda3 for the 2008.5 model year.

2008 Mazda3 GS Review
Saturday, May 31, 2008
You think that's too much credit? Well, you should know that the Mazda3 has won awards after awards across the globe, mainly because of its pleasant, sporty driving dynamics. As soon as I sat behind the wheel of my tester, I was won over. Like most people know, the 3 displays a little of Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" personality, which matches well the car's.

2008 Mazda 6 Sport Review
Friday, May 02, 2008
Since Mazda launched the 6, its competitors have gone under the knife for some pretty major plastic surgery. If you follow the visual lineage of the Accord, Altima and Camry, you might agree that it was only after the latest face-lift that any of them really pushed the styling envelope.

2007 Mazda5 GS Road Test
Friday, November 30, 2007
It's obvious that the minivan market is in a downward spiral, because more and more manufacturers are abandoning that segment in favour of sport-utility vehicles. That's too bad, because the practicality of a minivan is undeniable, but it's simply out of fashion.

Lexus GS lineup enhanced and expanded
Wednesday, November 21, 2007
Lexus has announced details of an update to their lineup of GS-Series luxury performance cars. Available in four models, the GS models offer more design touches, more power and a price repositioning to make them even more appealing to Canadian buyers. There's a new V8 engine for the lineup, too.
"Lexus of Canada has enhanced the entire GS line - including the GS 450h
hybrid model - with new standard features and specifications, and even more attractive suggested retail pricing," explained Yves Gionet, Director of Lexus Canada.

2007 Lexus GS 350 Road Test
Friday, September 14, 2007
Incongruities can be thought provoking. Such is the case with the 2007 line of GS performance sedans from Lexus. Of these, the less expensive GS 350 is powered by a V6 engine producing more horsepower and obtaining better fuel economy than the V8 engine in the more expensive GS 430. Head scratch. Aha, the V8 in the GS 430 produces more torque, and at a lower rpm to boot. Fair enough I say, but I'll still take the silken V6 in the GS 350 and pocket the residual.

2007 Mazda MX-5 GS Road Test
Sunday, July 15, 2007
I ask you: "What can be better than a hot sunny summer's day at the wheel of a convertible with the one you love by your side?" Those that answered "Nothing" probably own a convertible or a roadster and have experienced such a day when all the planets are aligned in perfect harmony. Mazda has enjoyed tremendous success with their roadster; best of all, Mazda has been infusing its vehicles with small doses of Miata-ness to the great pleasure of fans of the brand since 1990.

2007 Lexus GS 450h Road Test
Sunday, December 17, 2006
In what could be a perfect world, there would be no hunger, no poverty, no pain, no bosses, no diseases, you get my drift. In this world, everyone would be comfortable, warm, have a nice house, good friends, you know, a little of everything that makes us all feel good and safe. Again in this life, we would still need to get around. We would therefore need a vehicle that would perfectly match our way of life. This car, in my opinion, would be the Lexus GS 450h. Keep in mind that this is an imaginary world and that I agree that a Prius, a Civic hybrid or a Yugo could the same but this is my fantasy and it serves my purposes. This car lacks nothing nor needs anything except maybe some character not unlike other Toyota and Lexus products.

2007 Lexus GS 450h Road Test
Monday, September 25, 2006
To be perfectly honest with you, Hybrids aren't really my cup of tea. Maybe, it's my European background, but I'd rather drive a modern diesel unit, if it's a case of saving a few bucks on fuel. Yet nowadays, the Hybrid vehicles appear to have reached an almost status symbol level, with Hollywood stars buying them to prove to us mortals that they're "earth friendly folk" who truly care about our environment.

2007 Lexus GS 450h Road Test
Monday, August 14, 2006
Just when folks were getting their heads wrapped around small, economical hybrids such as Toyota's Prius, Lexus moved the goal posts with their luxurious RX 400h, hybrid SUV. While the automotive field realigned itself to the altered posts, Lexus struck again- this time even harder. The new GS 450h is the world's first full-hybrid sedan to feature a front engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Although I haven't seen the research to confirm this, I am prepared to venture onto a limb and say that it's also the world's fastest and most self-indulgent hybrid sedan currently in production, but as you may have guessed, competitors are nipping at its 18-inch wheels.

Last of Lexus offerings priced by Toyota Canada
Wednesday, April 05, 2006
Toyota Canada has released prices for the two new 2007 model year sedans joining its upscale Lexus lineup this May -- the ES 350 and the GS 450h hybrid -- and apparently completed the brand's offerings in Canada.

2006 Lexus GS 430 RWD Road Test
Saturday, April 01, 2006
Variety may be the spice of life, but it also makes it pretty tasty if you're in the market for a mid-sized, vee-eight luxury sedan. Whereas, traditionally, the segment had been dominated by four-doors of the Germanic variety, competition outside of the Fatherland has added not only diversity but also value to this burgeoning segment. Where Audi A6 4.2s, BMW 550is and Mercedes-Benz E500s play in the $80,000 to $100,000 league, there's plenty of action one rung down the price ladder.

2005 Mazda3 Sport GS Road Test
Sunday, July 03, 2005
Just about every carmaker has a vehicle for under $25,000 that seats 5 people, and gets over 35 MPG. This isn't very exciting stuff, because it's becoming somewhat harder to find a car in this price range that stands out and grabs attention, with its looks and performance, while offering every-day value and usability at the same time.

2003 Hyundai Accent GSi Road Test
Tuesday, July 22, 2003
If I were to describe the 2003 Hyundai Accent GSi in one word, I would say it is "fun." It's just that simple. So what makes the GSi so fun? First of all, while a 4-speed automatic is available so is the 5-speed manual transmission. I have mentioned before that low horsepower cars are always better in stick shift mode, and I am "sticking" to my statement.
