Those of us waiting for a zero-emissions vehicle to hit the mass market may not have to wait too much longer. Auto makers reinforced their commitment to producing hydrogen-fuelled automobiles at the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells 2011 conference in Vancouver, BC. There's a bit of a catch, though.

Jesse James successfully shattered the land speed record for a hydrogen powered vehicle yesterday in the Mojave Desert. James attempted the challenge while filming his hit television show "Jesse James Is A Dead Man" which premiered May 30, 2009. The show was filmed yesterday and will air as the season one finale of "Jesse James Is A Dead Man" premiering on Sunday, August 9 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on Spike TV.

The race to create the first hydrogen-powered vehicle is still on, and several companies are already well on their way. It's the case with Honda and its FCX Clarity, for example, and with GM and its Chevrolet Equinox
assembled in Oshawa, on the outskirts of Toronto. But the Germans, far from lagging behind, are ahead of the field, thanks to the Hydrogen BMW 7 Series among others, around 100 of which have been driving the world's, but mostly North America's, roads for nearly two years.

Honda's FCX hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle is now officially in the hands of a few celebrities who are leasing it over the next few years. American Honda Motor Company has announced that Ron Yerxa and Annette Ballester have accepted delivery on Friday, July 25th at Honda of Santa Monica. Yerxa and Ballester are the world's first FCX customers, and are the first of about 200 others who will lease the machine in Japan and the USA over the next several years.

Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid begins road testing in Japan

On Friday, Mazda Motor Corporation received permission from Japan's Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) to test the Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid minivan on public roads. The innovative hybrid system increases the vehicle's power by 40 percent and doubles the hydrogen fuel range to 200 kilometers. Mazda aims to complete the road trials and start commercial leasing in Japan during fiscal year 2008.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is showing clear signs of its commitment to develop and produce green vehicles like electric cars and fuel cell vehicles. The French-Japanese auto group announced mass-marketing of electric vehicles in Israel and Denmark starting in 2011. More importantly for us, Nissan recently confirmed plans to start selling electric vehicles in the U.S. and Japan by the end of 2010, meaning the Chevrolet Volt will have some competition right from the start.

Visitors will get a closer look at Canada's first zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Members of the medias are invited to step behind the wheel and drive this innovative vehicle on a 340-meter interior track. Representatives of the UWAFT development staff will be on hand to present their project and the technology being used. In addition, three marquee guests will give lectures: Gary Lunn, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, David Miller, Mayor of Toronto, and Adel S. Sedra, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo.

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas, which took place from April 10 to 13 at the California Speedway, in Fontana, allowed students from Canada, Mexico and the United States to showcase their skills in the development of extremely fuel-efficient vehicles. Students from Mater Dei High School, in Indiana, set a new mileage record this year. The goal of the competition was to see which car could drive the farthest while using the least amount of fuel possible. The new mark is 1,208.6 kilometers on a single liter of fuel. Actually, three teams broke the record set in 2007 by Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Honda Fuel Cell Vehicle First to Receive Certification

The Honda FCX has become the first fuel cell vehicle in the world to receive government certification, paving the way for the commercial use of fuel cell vehicles, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have certified the hydrogen-powered Honda FCX as meeting all applicable standards. The FCX has been certified by CARB as a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) and by the EPA as a Tier-2 Bin 1, National Low Emission Vehicle (NLEV), the lowest national emission rating. The FCX will also meet applicable U.S. safety and occupant protection standards.
