Volkswagen is convincingly running away with the fuel economy crown. After a Passat 1.6 BlueMotion managed to cover 2,457 kilometres across Europe on a single tank of diesel, an American couple from Houston, TX completed a 2,617 km drive to Sterling, VA without filling up even once.

With the likes of the GTI and new turbocharged 2012 Beetle, most VWs are more about German engineering, amenities and owner satisfaction. Over the years, I've come to appreciate the Volkswagen marque and its lineup of vehicles - and the brand-new 2012 VW Passat 2.5L is no exception.

I quite enjoy a flashy car. Bright green paint job; hood scoop; flared wheel wells; a massive wing; skirt kit; flashy decals; bring it on. Flashy cars get all the attention, they've got all the gusto and usually have the goods to back it up. If I'm driving an in-your-face vehicle, I prepare myself for a week of questions, second-looks and general curiosity from neighbours and passersby.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love station wagons. A while back, I test-drove a Volkswagen Passat and a Cadillac CTS wagon. As I cruised around in these cars, I felt so smart, so much wiser than everyone. Here I was driving around in a car with as much cargo room as most other SUVs and CUVs all the while consuming much less fuel (OK, not exactly true with the Caddy) but you get the point.

The People's car company has been all over the map these past few years. From acquiring Bentley to creating one of the most successful Le Mans cars, the Audi R8, Volkswagen is moving forward, albeit with difficulty. Most recently, they introduced a $100,000 Sedan with a VW logo and finally launched the World's fastest production car, the Bugatti Veyron. When looking at this list of achievements, one would never believe that Volkswagen AG is in dire straights. Sales have been plummeting because of the enormously long life cycles of the vehicles (think 1999 to 2006 for the Golf) and their very spotty reliability record. There was a time not so long ago when Volkswagen was the champion of economical, simple fun cars to drive that were reasonably trouble free.

The 2004 Volkswagen Passat is mostly unchanged from the 2003 model year. A complete head to toe revamp is scheduled for mid-2005. The Passat has been the best selling midsize German car since its introduction on our shores in 1990. Volkswagen has been through some very tough times in the recent past and their sale numbers have fallen. But so have almost everyone else's. The next 12 months will be a crucial time because VW will be introducing at least 3 new models and the public will have to bite, otherwise VW will have to make more cuts. There have even been talks of a takeover of the company by investment groups. This is Germany's largest manufacturer and hopefully the eccentricity and overspending it is known for has been curbed. The tested Passat was a GLS TDi with the leather and luxury packages and Volkswagen's electronic stabilization program (ESP). It retailed for 35 830$.
