Volkswagen is convincingly running away with the fuel economy crown. After a Passat 1.6 BlueMotion managed to cover 2,457 kilometres across Europe on a single tank of diesel, an American couple from Houston, TX completed a 2,617 km drive to Sterling, VA without filling up even once.

Over the last 40 years, Mallon has collected more than 2,100 Chevy-branded items including signs, racing flags, books, pop can, hats, belts, shirts, playing card, drinking glasses, a big pile of miniature cars -- oh, and a biplane. And a tractor trailer.

Nokian Tires sets top speed record for E-RA on ice

Just about a year after setting an ice speed record of 331.610 km/h in an Audi RS6 shod with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tires, Nokian has done it again -- this time in an electric vehicle. Armed with the same rubber, test driver Janne Laitinen set a record of 252.09 km/h in an E-RA (Electric RaceAbout).

Infiniti M35h fastest hybrid in the world

If there are still some people out there who are convinced that hybrids just aren't capable of anything remotely exciting, Infiniti will shut them up for good with the M35h, which made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest full hybrid in the world, flying over 400 metres (or a quarter mile) in an average of 13.9031 seconds.

The world record for fastest car on ice (330.695 km/h) set by the Bentley Continental Supersports didn't last very long. On March 6, Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian reached a top speed of 331.610 km/h on the Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland.

On September 1st, American driver Craig Henderson completed a 1,478-mile trip behind the wheel of his Avion car using only 46.98 litres (12.41 US gallons) of diesel -- the equivalent of 1.975 litres per 100 kilometres (119.1 mpg)! This remarkable feat helped him break two of his previous records.

On a beautiful sunny day at 25 degrees the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved a new landspeed world record for production cars, on the proving grounds of the Volkswagen Group at Ehra-Lessien (nearby its headquarters at Wolfsburg). In the presence of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 431 km/h.

The 2011 Ford Mustang today breaks new ground, cracking the record books as not only the most fuel-efficient Mustang ever, but also the first production car in history to produce more than 300 horsepower and more than 30 mpg highway. The Mustang's official EPA ratings - completed this week - certify that models equipped with the 305-hp 3.7-liter V-6 and available six-speed automatic transmission achieve 31 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city.

Covering over 4,900 kilometers (3,044 miles) in three days, driving specialist Gerhard Plattner is gearing up for his next record-breaking attempt as the first driver to reach three continents in just three days. On June 8, Plattner and his co-pilot Franz Doppler will depart from Rabat, Morocco, in an Audi A3 1.9 TDI e with the goal of reaching the Asian side of Istanbul no more than 72 hours later. You almost never hear about a heavy truck breaking fuel economy records. But that's exactly the feat the new Mercedes-Benz Actros managed to pull off. This 40-ton tractor/trailer consumed 19.44 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers during a 7-day round-the-clock test drive of 12,728.94 kilometers.

PONTIAC BONNEVILLE BREAKS 200 MPH SPEED BARRIER AT SALT FLATS

Pontiac, the Excitement Division of General Motors (NYSE: GM), added another chapter to its rich racing heritage at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah when a four-door Bonneville barreled through the timing traps at 202.524 mph making it the first front wheel drive production car to exceed 200 miles per hour. The record breaking run occurred on August 16.
