2012 Lexus RX 450h Review
Thursday, April 12, 2012
The RX 450h is a midsize luxury crossover that features all-wheel drive and hybrid-driven performance. While it failed to achieve its rated fuel economy, it provided a refined driving experience and better-than-average economy for this popular segment.

2004-2011 Mazda RX-8 Pre-Owned
Saturday, February 04, 2012
A four-door coupe with room for the kids? That was the Mazda RX-8's premise. And on top of its rare suicide doors and striking looks, the RX-8 also featured a unique rotary engine that delivered plenty of revs. Sharp-as-a-tack handling, track-ready steering and plenty of performance were part of the package.

2011 Mazda RX-8 R3 Review (video)
Thursday, September 01, 2011
Every time I get behind the wheel of the RX-8, I remember how much I like it. It's the before and after where I kind of forget what it's like to pilot this rambunctious ride, and I'm not quite sure why. It's not that it's a forgettable car; I mean, really, looking at it, how could it be? And it's not that it's boring to drive either. I spent the week pondering this thought behind the wheel.

These are stressful times. Severely taxing even. If cancer rates, gas prices and unrest in many parts of the world weren't enough, according to some scriptures, we just made it through the "End of the world" at the end of last May. Let's not start on December 2012...

Green cars 25% less fuel efficient than advertized
Thursday, December 30, 2010

2010 Mazda RX-8 GT Review
Friday, September 24, 2010
The RX-8 is not out to impress your friends with its looks, but it can. The RX-8 is not meant to carry you, your spouse and your two kids to grandma's house, but it can. The RX-8 was not conceived to spend every weekend on a track, but it can. The RX-8 should not be a comfortable enough vehicle to be driven on a daily basis, but it can. In fact, the RX-8 can be a great many things this type of car should typically not be, but it is.

2010 Lexus RX 450h Review (video)
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Lexus's first hybrid crossover model was called the RX400h. It promised the responsible operation that hybrids offer-- but that was far from the only compelling reason to consider it. By wearing the green side of its identity discreetly, it came off as a largely compromise-free hybrid that happened to be a great premium crossover, too.

2010 Lexus RX 450h Review
Friday, January 01, 2010
What if you or I had to choose just one vehicle? What if we lived in a communist regime and all citizens were entitled to a singular vehicle, a real people's car? Consider the implications and concessions you would have to make if such a "rule" was imposed on your daily lives. Other than voting for the alternative party during the next elections, what would you do?

2010 Lexus RX 350 Review
Tuesday, November 03, 2009
The RX series has been a "bread and butter" product for Lexus since its introduction in 1999. Along the way, the RX raised the bar in the luxury crossover segment as it matured and evolved into a highly sought-after all-wheel-drive vehicle by those with premium expectations and wallets to match.

2009 Mazda RX-8 R3 Review
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
Snuggly set behind the wheel, you drive the car as if it was a roller-coaster wagon, gobbling corner after corner without even feeling the outside forces that so desperately try to send the machine into a tailspin. Sure, the takeoff wasn't very electrifying, but once up to speed, you can shred the perfect line almost every time out.

Lexus puts the world at your fingertips
Thursday, April 30, 2009
Increasingly sophisticated on-board entertainment, navigation and information systems are among the must-have features of today's premium cars, but adjusting and monitoring their functions can risk taking a driver's attention away from the road ahead. Designing a centralised control system that is simple to understand, intuitive to use and likely to cause the least distraction from the job of driving was a key challenge for Lexus in designing the new RX 450h.

First, there was the luxury SUV. The market consisted of Navigators, Escalades, LXs and the like. These were popular when size and power were priorities, but they were big, thirsty, low on performance, and about as easy to park as a bus.

2009 Mazda RX-8 R3 Review (video)
Friday, January 16, 2009
The RX-8 didn't need to be any more agile or sporty, but Mazda's dialed it up a notch anyways with their new-for-2009 R3 package. Building on the machine's recent makeover, the R3 kit adds a few goodies to get the tuner and performance buffs talking around the water cooler. Sunroof? Gone. Power seats? Gone. Lip-kit? Very much. The R3 add-ons give RX-8 a strictly race-track appearance.

For 2009, Mazda's flagship sports coupe gets numerous improvements. While relatively subtle, these upgrades inject newfound dynamism into the car. After five years on the market, the RX-8 was beginning to show serious signs of age. The rebirth took place last January at the Detroit Auto Show. The design is remarkable. The RX-8 is simply magnificent, evolving with flair while retaining the same overall look.

2008 Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Edition Review

Off the bat, the RX-8 is unusual; it was designed as a sports car and drives like a sports car, but there's a real trunk, four doors and a different kind of engine. A refresh and some additional features for Mazda's rotary-powered RX-8 will see it enter the 2009 model year with a sharpened look and the addition of an enhanced performance model. RX-8 is a popular car for shoppers after the racy looks and performance of a coupe, coupled with the added utility and sensibility of a four-door. It's powered by Mazda's unconventional rotary "Renesis" engine, which displaces just 1.3 litres but generates up to 232 horsepower.

2008 Lexus RX 350 Review
Monday, March 24, 2008
Driving a Lexus is nothing like what you're used to. I'm not exactly saying that these cars are a total blast to drive -- actually, the opposite would be more accurate -- but there's such an aura around this premium Japanese brand that it almost feels like sitting in a tea salon: starchy but comfortable. The Lexus RX 350 does not escape this trend. While initially marketed as a sport utility vehicle, the fact of the matter is that it became the king of luxury crossovers. And like any other Lexus, the RX makes up in grace and efficiency what it lacks in sportiness.

Detroit 2008: Mazda presents 2009 RX-8 as well as Furai and Taiki concepts (video)
Monday, January 14, 2008
Mazda's Zoom-Zoom ideology was on display in full swing today at the NAIAS in Detroit, where the Japanese carmaker presented several new production and concept models to give a taste of their future direction for performance and style. Geared towards drivers who race their cars competitively on weekends, the Furai concept is designed after an ALMS race car- but with an eye for environmentally friendly operation as it runs on ethanol fuel produced by British Petroleum (BP). The Furai rides Mazda's Courage C65 chassis which was introduced just two seasons ago. Power for the sleek, lightweight racer comes from a triple-rotor rotary engine with a potent 450 horsepower.

2007 Mazda RX-8 GT Road Test
Wednesday, November 07, 2007
Weight is the enemy. By keeping a car as light as possible, we improve its performance and its handling. A good example of this theory is Mazda's RX-8. The Japanese automaker conceived a sports car that's different than what the competition currently offers. Just like its predecessor, the 1993-2002 RX-7, efforts were made to substantially reduce the vehicle's weight.

2007 Lexus RX 400h Ultra Premium Road Test (video)

I live in the North. Everything is 20 minutes by highway away from everything else and a far cry from the crowded streets where hybrid cars make most sense. Whether you drive in Sudbury Ontario or the crowded streets of Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver, Lexus's RX400h hybrid is a machine which doesn't make its powertrain the largest part of its identity- so you don't have to be driving through gridlock every day to justify owning one. The 400h is less a hybrid and more a capable luxury performance SUV with all-weather, all-road operation that happens to have a battery and motor drive system under the floor.

2007 Mazda RX-8 GT Road Test
Saturday, November 04, 2006
The sound of Mazda's Renesis rotary engine and the willingness of it to rev its way into the stratosphere immediately distinguish the RX-8 from any other sports car. The petit, 1.3 litre rotary engine does not use an assortment of reciprocating pistons to deliver a stout 232 horsepower and 159 foot-pounds of torque to the rear wheels. Rather it follows a design that utilizes a couple of triangular-shaped rotors spinning within an oblong housing, creating an intake, combustion and exhaust phase with each revolution. German engineer, Felix Wankel originally invented the rotary engine in 1960 or so; since then it has undergone considerable refinement- most of it under the tutelage of Mazda engineers.

Zoom-Zoom: you've heard it, you've read it, and you may have shopped for or driven it too. It's a slogan with staying power that marketers strive for, but it's more than just a catch phrase. It's something that Mazda builds into every machine they make. It's a little bit of extra attention to lively handling, powerful brakes, peppy engines and driver interaction that's all designed to ignite ones thrill of the open road.

The RX line-up from Lexus has proven to be extremely popular with Canadian luxury SUV buyers over the past few years. That's not surprising, as this fine offering from Toyota's up-scale division, has scooped several J.D. Power awards for quality. This should make all Canadians smile. Why, because the RX is actually built at Toyota's award-winning plant in Cambridge, Ontario. In fact, they have been produced there since 2003, when that facility became the first and only plant outside of Japan to be given a mandate to build Lexus vehicles.

2007 Lexus RX 350 Road Test
Tuesday, July 18, 2006
There's a tremendous amount of practicality residing within the SUV crossover segment, and when the nameplate reads, "Lexus," plenty of luxury as well; their new RX 350 is a shining example of that. In this car-based mid-size example of the ever-popular "crossover" segment, Lexus has consolidated the utility and functionality of four-wheel-drive (FWD) with the comfort and opulence of a premium sedan. Life for the Lexus enigma began in 1998 with the launch of the RX 300. In 2005 both its V6 engine and nomenclature grew as it became the RX 330. For 2007 history repeats itself as the RX 330 morphs into the mightier and more refined RX 350. Stylistically, the RX series underwent a major makeover with the release of the 330 generation. The 350 version retains the 330's sharply cut lines, which makes it one of the sleekest-looking crossovers on the road, or off.

2005 Mazda RX-8 ''Shinka'' Special Edition Road Test
Wednesday, November 16, 2005
I love it when people start talking to me about cars. In the natural evolution of the conversation, somehow the question that always pops up is, "What do you think of this car?" which just so happens to be the car that the person drives. I bring up this example because I recently had one of 'those' conversations with someone who asked me about the Mazda RX-8. When I answered his question, I had nothing but praise for the RX-8 because I am a fan of its athletic performance and eye-catching curves and evolutionary rotary engine.

2005 Mazda RX-8 (Video Clip)

Other than Lexus and their RX SUVs, these two letters are essentially synonymous with performance within the halls of Mazda. North America first gazed upon an RX in 1974 under the denomination of a Mazda RX-4. What was particular about this car, other than its exterior design, was the advent of the Wankel Rotary engine called 13B. Instead of a conventional piston-run motor, this powerplant uses two rotors that simply replace the pistons, connecting rods and valves. These rotors rotate and go through the same four strokes as a regular internal combustion engine. Between 1975 and 1977, the rotary was put aside for our market.

The luxury SUV segment is in constant expansion. This is an example of another division that, 10 years ago, barely existed. Other than Land Rover and the Lexus LX 450, only the Jeep Grand Cherokee could have been considered a runner-up. Fast-forward through the decade and nearly every manufacturer now has a solid foothold in the segment. Certain builders are approaching the market with high-end Sport-utility trucks while others, like Lexus, are putting the emphasis on sumptuousness and richness.

It would be great if car manufacturers could sell cars to consumers like they do to automotive journalists. I just spent the better part of a day driving Mazda's full lineup of new cars, from the 3 right up to the RX-8. While flying to some secluded area for the specific purpose of test driving an upcoming vehicle isn't unusual, getting to drive each and every one of an automaker's cars back to back is a unique opportunity, which in this case allowed me to get a feel for the Mazda brand as a whole.

"GR8 - RX8" is what the personalized license plate on my 2004 RX8 tester proclaimed - and justifiably so! But I was determined not to let this prejudice influence my findings as I put the "sleek blue beauty" (say that three times fast) through the paces of a rigorous road test.
