2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid First Impressions

Bühl, Germany -- A Mercedes-Benz S-Class that burns as little fuel as a B200 may sound anachronistic. Yet, it's the new creed of the Stuttgart-based automaker. "We're going to show that high fuel economy and low emissions are not merely exclusive to small cars," declared Ulrich Mellinghoff, Vice President of Development, Safety, NVH and Experimentation at Mercedes-Benz Cars, while introducing the media to the all-new 2010 S-Class hybrid sedan, the first automobile of its kind in the Mercedes-Benz family.

From a purely historical stand-point, the brand savours an incredible pedigree for performance, technological advances and the highest level of luxury. Last year's arrival of the new 2007 redesigned flagship brought a new V8 engine and just recently, a thoroughly revised 4MATIC AWD system.

If I refer to the time when Cadillacs were cars reknown for their comfort and docility, there's nothing pejorative about calling this Mercedes-Benz a Caddy. The S550 deserves praise for its maneuverability and comfort. Certain of my colleagues don't appreciate a Mercedes as much because they're not as sporty as a BMW or an Audi. I won't start this debate, since each German brand targets a different clientele. We buy a Mercedes-Benz for its status, its classic lines and its comfort. Its power comes afterwards, as that's not Mercedes' premier objective with its sedans, with the exception of the AMG versions. And that suits me fine.
