The last we heard, Saab was expecting to relaunch production this week. As we now know, the Hawtai deal fell threw, thwarting the Swedish automaker's plans and forcing it to negotiate a new deal with Chinese distributor Pang Da. The company is currently poised to open discussions with its suppliers regarding its debts and is looking to get the assembly chains rolling again normally next week.

There's a lot riding on the shoulders, er, fenders of the 9-4X. Since Saab split from GM, the crossover debuting today in LA is only the second release for the now Spyker-owned company. Built on the new Cadillac SRX platform, the 9-4X will feature a 265-hp, 3.0-litre V6 or a 300-hp, turbo 2.8-litre V6 underhood and an available Haldex all-wheel drive system. It will share similar design cues with the 9-5 sedan, and features a well-appointed cabin.

After the withdrawal of Koenigsegg Group AB last month, GM had been in discussions with Spyker Cars about its interest in acquiring Saab. During the due diligence, certain issues arose that both parties believe could not be resolved. As a result, GM will start an orderly wind-down of Saab operations.
