The Tiburon was initially launched into a market full of sporty models like the Honda Civic SI-R, Toyota Celica, Ford Probe, Dodge Avenger and Nissan 240sx. Interestingly, its nameplate is about the only dedicated sport compact model to have survived the high insurance rates and fuel prices that killed off the vast majority of its competition. As the axe fell on the Tiburon's original ringmates, the Korean shark thrived.

Sports coupes have fallen on hard times. About twenty years ago, a bunch of manufacturers had at least one in their lineup, but not anymore. The Tiburon's rivals are falling one by one, and the latest one is Acura's RSX, which is discontinued for 2007.

Tiburon is the Spanish word for "shark" and when the original Tiburon was introduced in the mid 90s, it represented a daring take on styling in its class. Nothing could really compare in looks. It instantly stood out with a radical interior, sculpted bodywork, exaggerated curves and projector headlamps. The Tiburon had thrown conservative styling out the sunroof and sliced the envelope in half with its shark-fin spoiler. My kind of ride.

Las Vegas, with its architectural facades, glitz, glamour and bright lights isn't exactly known for delivering much substance behind its style, which is in sharp contrast to the car that would receive its official Canadian press launch there, the all-new Hyundai Tiburon coupe. That said access to a world class racing facility only minutes away from the downtown core combined with Nevada's dry weather conditions complimented the occasion perfectly.

Amongst all of the glitzy European and North American concept and production cars launched at the Motor show here, it was a quietly unveiled Korean car quietly that will probably turn up in the most Canadian driveways. That would be the Hyundai Tiburon, an inexpensive and sporty two-door coupe that's very popular with young female buyers. It's billed as a 2003 model, which means we probably won't see it until some time in 2002.

Hyundai Motor Company today unveiled the all-new 2003 Tiburon at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The all-new Hyundai coupe, known as the Tiburon in North America, the Hyundai Coupe in Europe and the Tuscani in Korea, will offer buyers a combination of stylish design, high quality and outstanding performance. The new Tiburon is longer and wider than the current version with a longer wheelbase for improved ride and handling. The new exterior design incorporates both straight lines and curves to emphasize vitality and strength.
