I was made for a Jaguar XFR. Everything about this car speaks to me, makes me happy. It's like I was born behind the wheel of such a machine. I'm not sure if it's my natural sophistication, my irresistible charm or simply my contagious liveliness, but I feel linked to this car that displays the self-same traits.

To stay competitive in the high-end luxury segment, Jaguar is updating the engine bays of both the XK and XF models. The XK Portfolio coupe and convertible, which will be the base models, get a 5.0-litre V8 in replacement of the old 4.2-litre unit, producing 385 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration times are reduced to 5.2 seconds.

Codenamed X290, our spies in England have captured shots of an early prototype of a "production-intent" Jaguar XF rolling around on the streets surrounding Jaguar's factory. Jaguar introduced a "concept" version of the XF at the recent NAIAS, but this heavily disguised prototype indicates that there has been a "toning-down" of certain design elements for the production version.

I been in this journo game for knocking on 5 years now and yet this is the first time that I've managed to scoop a British Jaguar to review.Now maybe that's because I have a bit of a background in Jaguar. After all, I did once own an independent Jaguar workshop. I was also a member of the Ontario Jaguar Owners' Club for many years and judged several of their JCNA concourse events.

We had the pleasure to meet Ian Callum at the 2008 Montreal International Auto Show, where the Jaguar XF made its Canadian debut. As Design Director at Jaguar, for whom he's been working the last eight years, Callum successfully rejuvenated the Jaguar XK and XKR. However, his main project has been the gorgeous XF sedan, which captures the spirit of the brand's founder, Sir William Lyons.

Launched at the Detroit Auto Show last year, the XF sedan now debuts in Canada. Luxurious and sporty, this Jaguar constitutes the first expression of the company's new styling direction. With three trim levels, the XF offers a choice of two powertrains: a 4,2-liter V8 that develops 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque as well as a supercharged version of the same engine, good for 420 hp and 408 lb-ft.
