Lotus Racing has apparently elected to shift design focus on their 2011 car in hopes to beat the opposition.
Lotus has introduced major aerodynamic upgrades at the Grand Prix of Spain and intends to use more new components at the British Grand Prix in July. The team technical director Mike Gascoyne told Autosport magazine that his team is now very much concentrating on the 2011 car, and the model will be going in the wind tunnel soon. Having only been given the green light for its entry six months before the start of this season, Gascoyne admits that the Lotus team had to focus on simply getting its challenger ready for this year rather than pushing it to the design limit. The 2011 Lotus could also be powered by a different powerplant. Rémi Taffin, head of Renault's engine programme, said the French engine supplier is ready to expand its customer supply to additional teams next season. Renault is currently providing V-8 engines for Red Bull Racing as well as its own works programme, but has been linked with Williams and Lotus -- both currently running Cosworth power -- as well for next season. This would not be new. Lotus used V-6 Renault turbo engines from 1983 to 1986 with the legendary Ayrton Senna amongst other drivers. Additionally, Mike Gascoyne was Benetton-Renault and Renault’s technical director from 2001 to 2003. So there's a connexion.
