Swiss driver Sébastien Buemi set again the fastest lap of the day at Jerez, driving the Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso. Takuma Sato and Sébastien Bourdais put their Toro Rossos in 2nd and 3rd places.
Pedro de la Rosa was 4th in the Mercedes-powered McLaren, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen or Ferrari and Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren). Fernando Alonso was back in the cockpit of the Renault for the first time since the last Grand Prix of the season. Felipe Massa was also back in action for Ferrari. He set the 10th fastest time of the day. The photo shown above illustrates well the differences between the test cars. The Renault of Alonso (front) is fitted with an almost flat rear wing to simulate the levels of downforce of the new 2009 car. Pedro de la Rosa's McLaren in the background is running the KERS system, but still carries the 2008 aero package with the massive rear wing.
