With yesterday's session being washed out by heavy rain showers, the Formula 1 teams testing at Jerez, Spain were keen to make the most of the dry and sunny conditions today. Initially the track was damp, but by mid-morning conditions had improved enough to allow the drivers and engineers to get down to some valuable set-up work on slick tyres.
German driver Timo Glock set the fastest time of the day, proving that the Toyota TF109 is fast in the dry and the rain. Glock was the only driver to lap the Spanish circuit in less than 80 seconds. Brazilian Felipe Massa returned to work after skipping yesterday's test, the Ferrari driver covering a massive 134 laps on his way to the second fastest time of the day, over four tenths of a second behind Glock. Two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso was the busiest man on track today, completing 152 laps onboard the Renault R29, which moved away from the bottom of the times to finish in third position on the timesheets. Finland's Heikki Kovalainen set the 4th time in his Mercedes-powered McLaren. Interestingly, he was just 0.1 second faster than the Force India of Giancarlo Fisichella in the Force India powered by the same engine and using the same gearbox.
