According to drivers that are familiar with the Barber Motorsports Park, passing should not be as easy and frequent as it was in the two opening races of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar series season.
According to former CART racer Scott Pruett, who won the Grand-Am event in Alabama held there last year, the 2.38-mile race course is demanding, challenging and a blast to drive but on which overtaking is virtually impossible. Pruett explained that you either qualified up front, pray for rain or use a very creative pit strategy if you want to have success on a circuit that has no straightaways or overtaking possibilities. This weekend, Team Penske’s Will Power will try to become the first driver in the 15-year history of the IRL to win the first three races of a season and, relying on the times he set when the series held its official testing session back in March, he has more than a chance. On the contrary, for Canadian Alex Tagliani, things could be a little bit harder as his FAZZT Racing team had decided, due to weather conditions, not to participate in the March tests. So everything will have to be learned on the spot. And, this weekend’s schedule sure won’t help as usually the teams get two practice sessions on Friday where they collect data and another one on Saturday morning in which they can change and evaluate set-ups. But, this time around, the scheduling has been change so that qualifying will be held directly on Saturday morning. Photos: IndyCar
