After making its entry into Formula One, Lotus is now set to enter this year’s Indy 500 under the name “Team Lotus USA”.
According to Motorsports News, Lotus is talking with an existing team about forging an alliance.
Claudio Berro, former Ferrari press officer, director of competition with Maserati and now Lotus Motorsports Director, confirms the plan and feels that the American marketplace is very important for Lotus and there is a pedigree and history at the Indy 500. Jim Clark drove a Lotus 38-Ford to victory in the 1965 Indy 500. Lotus then raced the spectacular Lotus 56 powered by a turbine engine that came very close to winning the race in 1968. Lotus plans to join the IndyCar programme with an existing team to begin with, because it is the easiest way in terms of logistics since there are only a few weeks to sort the deal out because the start of the season being so close. A further announcement will be made next month. Photos: IMS
