One of the most known teams in North America and race winners in Champ Car, IndyCar, Grand-Am and American Le Mans Series, Fernandez Racing will close its door on October 30th.
"It's been a good run but we're between a rock and a hard place and our poker hand didn't come up so good this time," said Tom Anderson, the co-owner with well-known Mexican driver Adrian Fernandez. A regular top finisher in the ALMS in the last three years with the backing of giant Lowe's, Fernandez Racing was looking for sponsorship either to stay in sports cars or, even, go back into the IndyCar series in 2010. Fernandez, one of the most popular and talented Mexican in racing, started his team back in 2001 in CART where the team scored its first victory ever in 2003 at Portland. Then the squad switched to the IRL in 2004 and won three races. A Grand-Am triumph in '06 was followed by seven wins in ALMS from 2007-2009 Fernandez said last month that he might have been able to keep Lowe's on board had he chosen to drive the Indy car again. But, now in his late forties, he wisely opted to pass. Photos: American Le Mans
