F1 In Schools: Results of the World Championships in London

The Koni Kats team from David’s Secondary School inGreystones, County Wicklow, Ireland took the top honours at the fifth Formula One in Schools Technology Challenge World Championships held this week in London.

At a glittering awards ceremony attended by Lewis Hamilton and VIP guests from the world of Formula One and education, the talented students were presented with the Bernie Ecclestone World Championship Trophy and coveted Automotive and Motorsport Engineering scholarships to City University London. They will also be given an exclusive tour of the McLaren Technology Centre tomorrow.

The Canadian/Australian collaboration team, AC Racing, raced their way to third place behind Teams from Ireland and Australia. This commonwealth team was the first collaborative to ascend to the Podium in the 9 years of the F1 in Schools program.

The Canadians, from Miles Macdonell Collegiate, consisted of Crawford Boyce, Stephanie Hiebert and Ben Kuilman worked well with their Australian team mates, Scott Bellingham, Dean Tsilfidis, from Noosa District High School to reach this landmark accomplishment. Mentored by David Woitowicz, the team was encouraged by the River East Transcona School Division and the Manitoba Government, Technical Vocational Initiative as well as other sponsors.

In addition to their third place finish AC Racing scooped up two of 12 individual achievement Awards, Best Portfolio and Best Collaboration.

This was the greatest level of achievement during the five years that Canadian teams have participated in F1 in Schools program.

The Canadian teams return home to tell their friends and schoolmates of the challenges they met and mastered at the World Championships. Team members who remain eligible for next year’s competition are already planning to challenge in their province for the right to enter the Canadian Nationals next spring and begin the quest for meeting the best in the world again.

Team Work Canada, the organizers of F1 in Schools within Canada, are most proud of the efforts by all team members and look forward to another successful year and involving even more Canadian students in the battle to reach the top step of the podium at the F1 in Schools World Championships for 2010.
