NASCAR President Mike Helton says rain experience in Montreal at the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Nationwide event could lead to rain tires in Sprint Cup.
The rainy weekend experience at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, could be a catalyst for rain tires in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series said Helton. The loyalty and enthusiasm of the crowd out at Île Notre-Dame had an obvious impact on Helton and his staff of officials who directed qualifying in the rain on Saturday, and continued racing after a brief downpour in Sunday’s Nationwide Series race. Explaining why there was no shortening of either day Helton said on ESPN “the Nationwide Series at road courses has wet tires this gives us the option (to run complete schedules). We agreed that we would try to run the balance of the race, the fans are great incredibly supportive of this event. This is another step in the learning experience.” Could this mean rain tires for road courses in the Sprint Cup like Infineon and Watkins Glen (which was postponed one day due to rain)? “I think as we do get the experience, the whole garage area gets more experienced,” he said commenting “there’s always the possibility. The amount of downforce on Cup cars is different (from Nationwide) the races are longer, but, who knows?” Photos: Philippe Campoux - Auto123.com
