The 2008 battle for the manufacturers' championship in NASCAR's Sprint Cup started in a very unusual way last January.
To begin with, the Toyota Camrys seemed very quick during the early testing sessions. But Dodges grabbed the first race of the season, the Daytona 500, and then, the fight involved Camrys, mostly with Kyle Busch (Camry No 18) at the helm and Fords with Carl Edwards (Ford No 99) grabbing the most victories for the brand. But at the end, Chevrolets bounced back with quite a few victories by Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) who would eventually win the NASCAR championship. In the Sprint Cup series, Chevrolet grabbed the most points, 219 with 11 wins while Ford finished second with four points less (215) also with 11 wins making this season another Ford vs Chevy battle. Toyota finished third with 207 points and 10 wins, a close call but Dodge could do no better that fourth with 151 points and 4 wins. In the Nationwide series, Toyota came out at the top with 253 points and 20 wins, Chevy with 201 points and 6 wins, Ford with 199 points but with 9 wins (!) and Dodge with 117 points with...no wins. Finally, within the Craftsman Truck series, Toyota came at the top with 178 points and 13 wins followed by Chevrolet with 166 points and 10 wins. Ford came in third with 115 points with only one win while Dodge closed the chapter once again with 91 points and only one win too. Photos: NASCAR
