Norwegian newspapers have hailed Petter Solberg a hero after he risked his life to help the victims of a powerboat crash in Norway at the weekend. The incident happened at the PokerRun powerboat festival in Stavanger, when a boat with five passengers on board flipped over at 185kph. Solberg was one of the first to arrive at the crash scene and dived into the icy water to help release people trapped in the upturned hull. The norvegian WRC driver was taking part in the event as a guest of the Johs Lunde marine group, which sponsors his WRC programme. Accompanied by a co-driver from the firm, Petter was leading a sprint race on Saturday afternoon in a 2000bhp craft when the boat in second place, the U.S. Outer limit, flipped over while attempting to overtake. The two trapped men, aged 39 and 48, were both taken to hospital with serious chest injuries. By Sunday evening their conditions were described as serious but stable. One other passenger remains in hospital with less serious injuries. The other two have been discharged. Photos: WRI2
