2002 Jeep Liberty - A Familiar Face in a Crowded SUV World

Jeep's 60 years of heritage runs so deep that the name itself has become slang for four-wheel drive. It therefore made sense for Jeep to incorporate the recognizable face of the original into the design of the new Liberty. One quick glance proudly displays the tall 7-slot grille, round headlights and protruding fender flares. Still, despite looking back to its roots for inspiration, the overall effect is fresh and modern.

The Liberty's interior is not only a masterfully artistic tribute to the circular shape - with the motif expressed in the door handles, vents, dials buttons and speakers - but the quality of materials and fit and finish is top grade. It seems that Jeep's relationship with Daimler and its investment into the new Toledo, Ohio manufacturing plant is paying off.

It not only looks well put together but the new Jeep feels solid too. This rigidity benefits both on and off the road. On pavement, the ride is smooth for a truck and remains stable during high-speed lane changing. This is mostly due to its radically 'un-Jeep' coil sprung independent suspension. While purists might balk at such a departure from tradition, most view the improvement in road holding as well worth the compromise in off-road ability.
