SLS-inspired new roadster
The baby Benz roadster has undergone a complete revision for 2012 that finds it looking far more like the exotic SLS from the front. This new-generation 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is also better performing than the previous version and more fuel-efficient too.

I often start a review with a couple of quick impressions of the tested vehicle noted in my first drive. In the case of this week’s tester, it was the SLK’s Direct-Steer technology that I was impressed with. Contra was found in my tester’s loud – unpleasant to my ears – exhaust note; more on these findings a little later.

Edition 1
My tester wasn’t just a new SLK 350, it was a special edition of the roadster intended to mark the launch of the new SLK-Class. Edition 1 is most notably distinguished by its Glacier Grey designo magno special matte-finish paint along with Edition 1 exclusive wheels and badging.

The uniqueness of Edition 1 extends to the vehicle’s cockpit as well, where occupants are surrounded by two-tone black/titan pearl Nappa leather that covers far more than just the seats. Jump into the cockpit at night and the solar red ambient lighting lining the armrests and centre stack will grab your eyes while imparting a slight sense of disco-mania.

I found the entire cockpit design and layout to be highly engaging and well constructed. This is definitely a highlight of the SLK that again appears to have been inspired by the potent SLS. Two aspects of the cockpit standout for me: the large circular metal air outlets that exhibit a retro look and the large analogue gauges that appear more precise than the finest instruments from Swiss watchmakers.

And there’s more to Edition 1
Along with special colours and materials, Edition 1 owners will enjoy the full list of content list that each Edition 1 is fitted with. This includes the power-operated panoramic vario-roof, the Mercedes-Benz Dynamic Handling Package with active damping plus Torque Vectoring Brakes.

My tester was also equipped with a navigation system, shift paddles, premium audio and Mercedes-Benz’s AIRSCARF neck heating system to ensure maximum comfort when the roof is down on those brisk fall days that are so wonderful for open-air motoring.
