For the last few years, Chrysler (the American part of the global DaimlerChrysler) has been marketing an interesting concept of the mid-sized car since it offers much more interior space than any other vehicles of its class. Unfortunately, this Chrysler car was dispersed within many makes and brands. In the sedan category, it was a Chrysler Cirrus, a Dodge Stratus and a Plymouth Breeze. In the coupe version, it was a Dodge Avenger and a Chrysler Sebring, the same name being used with the convertible.

For 2001, in Canada, all these versions will be sold under only one name, the Chrysler Sebring (in Canada, the Plymouth brand has disappeared except for the original Prowler, the Dodge brand sells only trucks except for the Viper while almost all cars are sold under the Chrysler brand. In the USA, Dodge still has the Stratus which is its version of the new Sebring). The Sebring will be available in three versions, a practical sedan, a sporty coupe and a beautiful convertible that will bow a little later.

Once again, DaimlerChrysler has chosen to use two different platforms, one for the sedan (made by Chrysler) and one for the coupe/convertible (produced in joint venture with Mitsubishi). Let?s start with the sedan. Outside, it is obvious that the new Sebring takes after its bigger sibling, the Intrepid/Concord. Though its front end is easily recognizable, one can trace its origins to the actual Concorde. The rear end is most likely lifted off the Intrepid with a slight redesign. The roof seems to have the same curve as the bigger Chrysler sedans but I find it also looks like a German car, probably an Audi. As for the side windows, they are larger at the front. But the size remains raisonable, mostly for city driving. Sedan Sebrings will be sold as base LX and more deluxe LXi models.
