As of today, 1 million Duramax engines will have been built. The first Duramax motor was introduced in 2001 and success was near instantaneous. Since then, GM's heavy duty diesel pickup market share has increased nearly ten times over the last six years.

The 6.6L V8 uses high pressure common rail direct injection and is equipped with a particulate filter to meet stringent 2007 emission requirements. The engine develops 365 hp (272 kW) and 660 lb.-ft. of torque (895 Nm). It is available in GM's Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks as well as the Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick not too mention the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

GM and Isuzu Motors Limited established DMAX Ltd in 1998. Isuzu is a 40% stake holder while GM holds 60%. The 584,000-square foot DMAX plant has an annual production of 200,000 engines.
