To add storage capacity an Avant wagon debuted in 1998 as a 1999 model offering stellar good looks along with a commodious cargo area - 878 to 1,812 L (31.0 to 64.0 cu ft) with the rear seatbacks upright or folded flat respectively. Back to 1996, standard seating material was cloth while vinyl was a no-cost option. 1997 saw new Jacquard satin cloth upholstery added, plus the console and armrests were trimmed with the identical fabric for a more harmonious look. A trip computer was also added to the options list. In 1998 a sport seat option offered better lateral support and attractive styling. Additional standard equipment and optional steering wheel mounted audio controls were added in 1999, while three distinct interior motifs, Advance, Ambiente and Ambition, were now available. Year 2000 brought such optional luxury items as an automatic dimming mirror, cellular phone, integrated garage door opener and a navigation system. Also, minor styling changes were made to both the interior, most noticeably a revised gauge package and center console, and exterior, which included a new grille, headlights, mirrors and door handles.
The 1996 to 2001 A4 is 45% less stiff than the current model but it sure is difficult to tell when only comparing it to its competitors. The old model feels quite solid at high-speed with only a little float while it's wonderfully agile in the corners, and altogether much improved over its Audi 90 predecessor. This has much to do with the addition of a multi-link front suspension, virtually eliminating torque steer. Also if ordered with quattro, Audi's legendary all-wheel drive system that was a stand alone option in 1996, its grip is improved dramatically in inclement weather conditions. Year 2000 brought chassis refinement, improving both responsiveness and ride quality.
