Inside it was reworked too, improving both aesthetics and ergonomics. Important features like variable-sized cupholders were added to the center console, the seats were improved and a passenger-side airbag was included. An option worth looking for is the overhead console that included covered bins for a garage door remote and sunglasses, plus a trip computer.
While the brochure said room for five it meant two adults up front and three kids in the rear, a configuration that works quite well. Three adults in the rear, however, and accommodations become tight. The narrow rear doors also impede ingress and egress for larger folks.

Cargo volume when the rear seats are upright is reasonably good though, at 932 L (32.9 cu ft). Fold the rear seatbacks flat and an impressive 1,954 L (69.0 cu ft) is available - most Cherokees came with an exterior mounted spare tire mount, reflected in these volume specs.
Mechanically it was unchanged. A capable 4-cylinder was standard, strong, a smooth inline 6-cylinder drivetrain optional, superb off-road prowess and rugged solid-axle body-on-frame construction were its strong suits.
