LX470 delivers confidence in a used luxury SUV
The LX is packed with a trophy-rack full of awards for customer satisfaction, reliability and resale value. In previous investigations of used Lexus models, the same was true. Unlike some comparable German machinery of this age, the LX appears largely devoid of the fussy wiring problems that many owners report.

Lexus has a top-notch reputation for quality for a reason, but the used LX still has some notable issues.

One of these is a common malfunction with the hydraulically adjustable suspension system. This allows varying ride heights to be engaged, and of course employs an array of pumps, sensors and actuators to drive the adjustment process. In the case of a failure, the LX could stick its rear high into the air, leaving owners to drive to their local dealer for repairs at the mercy of funny looks from other motorists. Apparently, this nuisance can happen when the height control sensor fails, or when the hydraulic fluid level is too low. It's a well documented problem.

Others include a possibly faulty sunroof motor / wiring assembly that can cause the sunroof to stop working. Telltale signs seem to include slow operation and grinding noises during use. This seems to be an expensive piece to repair, so be sure it works properly on a test-drive.

You'll also want to check the air conditioning, as it may require updated lines and a new expansion valve if it's making unwelcome noises or not working properly. Clunking or grinding noises under the truck could be a result of faulty ball joints, a loose parking brake mechanism or worn out 'anti-rattle' springs in the brakes.

Shoppers are best advised to carefully go over the LX's various features and controls to ensure that everything is working properly inside. The condition of the interior trim, carpeting and upholstery should be noted as well. Remember, a vehicle that's been well maintained tends to look that way.

The list of recalls is fairly minor, dealing mainly with running lights that could be too bright, as well as a possibly faulty trailer wiring harness.

When inspecting a used Lexus LX, be sure to ask the previous owner for any service records that may have available. If you're unsure of the vehicle's history, you'll want to factor in the cost of a full fluid change to the differentials, transfer case, engine oil and transmission, just to be safe.

Have a look underneath for any obvious signs of possible damage from off-road travel, specifically noting heavy dents or excessive rust. Given the relative complexity of this model, a check-over from a mechanic isn't a bad idea at all.

If you're in the market for a big, workable, family-ready used SUV from a premium brand, the LX470 should be at or near the top of your list.
