Up to this point GM had been careful not to mess too much with Saab brand characteristics inside either, thus the 9-3 retained the few unorthodox features that kept Saab loyalists loyal, such as the aircraft inspired cockpit highlighted by a center console mounted (originally floor mounted) ignition switch and hatchback configuration - a rare feature in the luxury sport sedan market.

While often the brunt of 'serious' sport sedan criticism, Saab's hatch was wonderfully convenient, with a much larger, more usable cargo area than its imported contemporaries at 615 L (21.7 cu ft) with the rear seats in place and 1,303 L (46.0 cu ft) when folded flat, and wider opening accessibility too. The new 9-3 increased interior spaciousness as well, with more shoulder and hip room than its predecessor - probably the old 900s weakest link.

Saab offered both 3 and 5-door versions, the former being the sportier of the two. Available in top-trim, the wickedly quick 230-hp 2.3-L 4-cylinder Viggen incorporated a lowered sport suspension, modified dampers, springs and anti-roll bars, larger diameter grooved and ventilated brake discs, plus upgraded wheels and tires - it's an edgy performance machine. Before I get too sidetracked, I should also mention a third body style. Saab's 2-door convertible is the only 9-3 with a trunk, and also available in Viggen trim by the way.

While the Viggen was exciting most 9-3s were sold in 205-hp turbocharged 2.0-L 4-cylinder guise (200-hp in 1999), a very capable engine offering decent acceleration due in part to 209 lb-ft of torque. Base models received a 185-hp 4-cylinder of the same displacement, boasting 194 lb-ft of torque available at a reasonably low 2,100 rpm for impressive acceleration, due in part to the car's extremely low (for a luxury car) 1,415 kg (3,120 lb) curb weight.
