If the heart is the engine, the soul of any Jaguar is it's hedonistic interior. The aroma of fine Connolly leather fills the air, while eyes feast on the exquisitely finished full-width walnut dashboard and perfectly sculpted wood and leather steering wheel. Jaguar truly understands ambience. Although starker than the XJ, the S-Type is easily the most luxurious vehicle in its class. Fortunately the tactile quality of the interior plastics used for the dash and console (the only shortcoming of last years car) has improved.
The fully adjustable front seats are comfortable, but some might find the bottom cushion a tad short. Although headroom in the back is at a premium for taller passengers, the S-Type's rear accommodation is adequate for two adults, with a third squeezed in for short durations. What impressed the mind of this gadget freak the most was the user-friendly voice activation system. Changing radio stations, adjusting the temperature and placing a call on the cell phone require no physical input, less uttering the words to do so. As much fun as this is, I couldn't help appreciating the safety considerations. After all, keeping your eyes on the road instead of the stereo is a good accident avoidance measure.
Safety issues aside, is this new S-Type a real Jaguar? I'd have to proclaim an enthusiastic YES! While pampering with luxury it amply rewards an enthusiastic right foot with thrilling performance. Sounds like a Jaguar to me.
