Other reports online indicate that some Impreza models may be prone to head-gasket leaks. If checking out a potential candidate for purchase, be sure to inspect the coolant reservoir overflow tank for signs of froth or sludge buildup, as the leak can cause engine oil and coolant to mix. Also check the engine's valve covers and underneath the car for signs of green dripping fluid. If it's got the leak, you may also experience a strong, sweet smell after stopping the car. You don't want to foot the bill for this repair.

If you notice any of the above, it's best to move to another machine. Due to the unusual configuration of the Boxer engine, the cost to change a head-gasket is particularly expensive, as the engine has to be dropped from the car. Your local Subaru dealership can help determine if your would-be used Impreza is completely healthy.

Recalls over the years include a defective parking rod in the automatic transmission which may allow the car to roll away when parked, faulty driver's seat bolts and a retaining clip for the cruise control cable which may prevent it from being switched off. Additionally, there's an engine oil control valve which may be improperly attached, allowing oil to leak out and possibly start a fire.

The last recall, on newer models, has to do with an air-bag occupant-detection wiring harness which could short out and cause improper deployment of the airbag. Of course, the dealership can check on recall work, and Subaru Canada can also check for outstanding work if owners call in with the machine's VIN number.

You'll want to get underneath the car and have a good look around with a flashlight. Impreza's are machines shamelessly driven in wintertime, so the potential for rust is large. Check for spots that look severely corroded or any signs of body perforation, moving to another vehicle if you find anything severe. Undercoated or oil-sprayed machines are preferable.

This is also a good time to check for signs of leakage underneath the engine, transmission and differentials. By the way, it's important to make sure the diffs are properly topped up with fresh fluid to ensure proper and long-lasting performance from the AWD system. This is part of Subaru's recommended maintenance plan. Ask the car's former owner if they've stuck to it.

If you find a used Impreza you like, chances are it'll be a healthy and reliable driving partner. Throw on a set of snow tires, and start planning to stick it to Mother Nature all winter long.
