I didn't ever need to use 6th gear, but did so as testing every aspect of a car is what I'm paid to do. The tall final ratio benefits gas mileage and allows the engine to cruise at revolutions nearer to idling speed. For similar reasons 1st gear is also a little redundant, other than for tire-spinning smoke shows - traction control defeat switch required. That said BMW does recommend starting in first gear for reduced clutch wear, just go easy with the right foot.

In short the 1957 BMW 507 inspired Z8 is one of the most wonderful sports cars ever created. Its retro styled interior trim mixed with thoroughly modern amenities displays fluid function and artistic form. With nearly 400 growling V8 horsepower under the long sleek hood, a flawless 6-speed manual at your side, lightweight aluminum construction and a suspension only BMW could have called into being, it eliminates one undulating dip and crest after another spine tingling serpentine curve, begging to go faster, yearning to be pushed harder until roadside scenery has been blurred into distant memory.

Truly the BMW Z8 is history in the making. It will long be lauded by automotive historians, lusted after by young boys to old men, and almost every woman that catches sight of it. The Z8 is in a class of one, wholly distinct and directly incomparable.
