But what's under the surface? The LX receives Chrysler's smooth and powerful 200-hp 2.7-L V6. Its ample power and 190 lb-ft of torque is adequate for quick launches and standard highway passing maneuvers. Incidentally, this engine features a direct coil-on-plug ignition system and platinum tipped spark plugs allowing 160,000 km intervals between tune-ups. The LXi gets 12 additional horsepower thanks to a detuned version of Chrysler's 24-valve, SOHC, 3.5-L V6 that delivers a substantial 234-hp and 241 lb-ft of torque - the old 3.2-L pushrod engine is history. The top-line Limited engine is none other than the 3.5-L found in last years LHS, using electronically controlled manifold tuning and short-runner valves to produce 250 soul-stirring horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque.

Like last year's Concorde and LHS, the AutoShift sequential shifting automatic found in other Chrysler products is not available. The new model makes due with a more luxury configured 4-speed automatic with overdrive, still driving the front wheels. Low-speed traction control is standard on the Limited, as is ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD) and speed proportional power steering. An optional Luxury Touring Group package makes these items available on the LXi.

While biased toward luxury, the Concorde holds the road with a sporty agility. This is mostly owing to a fully independent touring-tuned suspension system, power rack and pinion steering and standard 16" wheels. While the base car gets updated wheel covers, the LXi receives new aluminum wheels, also 16". The performance edge goes to the Limited because of its 10-spoke, 17" painted or chrome-finished alloys, also newly styled.

All LH cars are capable people and cargo haulers with more head, elbow and leg room than most of their competitors. The Concorde has what must be the largest trunk in the industry, accessible by an optional 50/50 split rear seat.
