The 5-speed manual shifts better than previous versions, but it's still a little clumsy. The Ford derived automatic, on the other hand, is close to seamless from gear to gear. Likewise, the B-4000's ride is very smooth considering its traditional ladder-frame construction. Handling is also impressive, due mostly to rack-and-pinion steering and an independent, double-wishbone front suspension and stabilizer bar. Its solid rear axle is suspended by leaf springs, important for carrying heavy loads as well as towing. Four-wheel drive models feature an electronic shift transfer case axle system, which can be conveniently engaged using a switch on the dash.
Although the majority of Mazda pick-ups only get street use, B-Series trucks are tough and rugged enough to tackle serious jobs. Just how tough? The steel body is mounted on a steel frame bridged by seven crossmembers - eight on Cab Plus versions. This increased stiffness is especially appreciated when carrying heavy loads or towing.
Climb inside and you'll appreciate the civilized accommodation. The dash is well laid out with large legible gauges and a simple HVAC system. The base SX includes dual-airbags (with a deactivation switch for the passenger side) and 4-wheel ABS as standard safety equipment. Dual Sport trim features air conditioning, raised suspension, 15-inch wheels, body-colour bumpers, fender flares and front grille, resulting in the aggressive stance of a sporty 4WD in a 2WD truck. The Dual Sport is available in three cab configurations including the regular cab, two-door extended Cab Plus and four-door extended Cab Plus 4, just like the rest of the B-Series line. SE trim adds chrome accents, an SE body stripe, cruise control with steering wheel buttons, cloth seat inserts, tilt, leather steering wheel and alloy wheels. With 4.0-liter V6 powered trucks, a specially priced 'Plus' package includes interior convenience items, sport seats, power windows, mirrors and doors with remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/cassette audio system with in-dash CD as well as fog lamps - fog lamps are already standard on the Dual Sport and 4x4 SE.
