There are two V6's available, or should I say two variations of the same engine. The SE1 trimmed Grand Am is available with a 170-hp 3.4-L V6. If you still want more, ante up for the Ram Air equipped 3.4-L V6 that comes in the GT, good for 175-hp and 205 lb-ft of torque. Speaking of torque, torque-steer is very apparent in both 4 and 6-cylinder cars, locking the steering wheel mid-corner when accelerating - a common problem among front-wheel drive cars due to uneven drive shafts.

Things are just as sporty inside the cabin. A large orange-backlit tachometer and speedometer are flanked by temperature and fuel gauges (with convenient fuel door indicator arrow) in an aggressively styled dash. The dash itself receives soft-touch plastic, giving it the feeling of quality. Heating and ventilation controls are the 3-dial variety, easy to manipulate while driving.

Standard Grand Am SE features include a 6-speaker AM/FM stereo with CD, air-conditioning, tilt steering wheel, left-side remote mirror, power locks, remote trunk release, auto headlights and a rear deck-lid spoiler. The seats of my SE1 test car were covered in attractive gray velour - the GT comes with deluxe cloth while leather is standard with the GT1 package. While comfortable, the seat foam was too soft to provide the lateral support necessary for performance driving. Other SE1 features include a manually operated 4-way driver's seat with power height adjustment, dual power mirrors, keyless entry, power windows, 70/30 split-folding rear seatbacks and cruise control with steering wheel controls.
