If your checklist includes serious horsepower, you definitely should drive a GTI. Made legendary since its 1984 North American introduction, the GTI is the iconic 'hot-hatch'. The current model offers a choice of two engines, a 180-hp 1.8-L 4-cylinder - up 30-hp from last year - and a 174-hp 2.8-L VR6 - soon to be replaced by a 201-hp multi-valve version. Both engines are a scream under acceleration, especially when mated to the 5-speed manual. A 5-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual-mode is available.
All Golf's handle well due to independent McPherson struts up front and an independent torsion beam axle in the rear, coil springs and beefy stabilizer bars. Better yet, the GTI's sport suspension stimulates the senses when pushed to the limit. The standard 15-inch wheels are replaced with 16" alloys on the 1.8T and 17's in VR6 trim. Braking is equally impressive as ABS assisted 4-wheel discs come standard across the line.
If an interior manufactured with quality materials and first rate fit and finish is on your list, then look no further. The little Volkswagen has no equal. Truly, its soft-touch plastics, simple yet elegant design and superb build quality surpasses many premium brands, let alone its compact competition. There is no shortage of premium features either. The standard car includes a 'switchblade' style key fob remotely connected to a central locking system, plus heated exterior mirrors, an anti-theft alarm system with immobilizer, full-size spare tire and ultra cool blue and red illuminated gauges and interior switches. Cruise control is standard on diesel and GLS models. Other GLS features include powered outside mirrors, one-touch power windows, heated windshield washer nozzles, air conditioning, front centre armrest and more. The GTI adds color-keyed trim details, clear lens side blinkers and the aforementioned performance upgrades. Other options include a class-leading power glass sunroof, leather trim and side-curtain air bags.
The Golf performs well in interior capacities too. Five adults fit easily into its comfortable seats with head room to spare for tall occupants. Fold the 60/40 split-back rear seats and 1,184 liters of cargo space is at your disposal. Also, either 2 or 4-door models are available. The 2-door includes front seats that conveniently fold up and out of the way for easy rear passenger ingress and egress.
