Out on the open road is where the Jetta literally comes alive. Its power assist rack and pinion steering is direct with virtually no dead spot at center. A four-wheel independent suspension system includes McPherson struts, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers and a 23 mm integrated stabilizer bar, front and rear. In base trim the Jetta receives 15-inch steel wheels with P195/65 R 15 H all weather tires, giving it a comfortable ride and decent handling. Move up to the GLS and GLX models and either P205/55 R 16 H or P225/45 R 17 H tires grip attractive alloy rims. While these reduce ride comfort slightly, the benefits in the twisty-bits are obvious.

Few car companies construct interiors with better materials or quality workmanship than VW, even among the premium marques. Likewise, the brand's plethora of features drives Volkswagen further upscale. In the Jetta, standard items include heated mirrors, an anti-theft alarm with immobilizer, plus power windows and locks with remote access. A premium 8-speaker AM/FM cassette audio system comes standard as well, with optional CD. That said the optional Monsoon system is well worth the upgrade. Additional upgrades are plentiful, with some examples being a power moonroof and 5-temperature heated leather seats with 8-way power adjustment.

Inside you'll find plenty of room despite its compact dimensions. The accommodating rear seats fold in a 60/40 configuration allowing for longer items to be passed through from the large trunk while a third person rides along.

Safety features include four-disc ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), a brake wear indicator on the dash, dual front air bags plus a side-impact safety system called Side Curtain Protection. Also, a seat-belt tensioning system and lower anchorage and tethers for children (LATCH) in the rear outboard seats allow you to install specifically designed child seats that fit in anchors located between the upper and lower seat cushions.
