On the plus side, the S60's standard features and available options are too numerous to list. Take it from me. You won't be wanting for creature comforts and cutting-edge techno gadgetry. Rather than adhering to tradition for tradition's sake, Volvo has found inventive solutions in areas that most car manufacturers haven't even questioned. Breaking away from conventional push button selectors, the radio uses a rotating dial to access previously selected stations. Not only does this approach occupy less space, it results in a cleaner design. Incidentally, the optional 150-watt audio system with 4-disc in-dash CD player, Dolby pro-Logic surround sound and active sub-woofer is one of the best factory systems I've ever tested. Just below the stereo is Volvo's wonderfully simple climate control system. Large buttons incorporating user-friendly pictographs direct airflow with rotating knobs for fan speed and other adjustments.

Its 247 hp 2.3-liter, 5-cylinder high-pressure turbocharged engine shoots the S60 forward with a vengeance - arriving at 100 km/h in only 6.4 seconds. If neck-snapping acceleration isn't high in your list of values, the less expensive yet almost identical looking S60 2.4T might be more appropriate. With a low-pressure turbocharged I5 rated at a healthy 197 horsepower, it's also no slouch at the stoplight. Still too exciting? Opt for the 168 hp 2.4-litre base engine. While a 5-speed manual is standard with the base 2.4-litre and high-end T5 models, Volvo's effective and user-friendly 5-speed automatic transmission with Geartronic manual mode is available on both the 2.4T and T5. Gears are selected by tapping the shifter forward or back to execute up and down shifts.

All S60's have a MacPherson strut suspension system up front and a multi-link set-up in the rear but the T5 is optimized for enthusiasts. Attractive multi-spoke 17" by 7.5" alloy wheels shod with 235/45/17 Pirelli Cintyrato P6 tires assist the top-line during high-speed maneuvers. Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) is an option that adds yet more stability in slippery conditions.
