To be fair the fully-loaded S80 75th Anniversary offers more goodies than any of its competitors. Its 50.8 mm (2.0 in) of additional rear legroom allow rear occupants stretching space while watching a remote control activated 68-channel color TV mated to a state-of-the-art DVD player, and enjoying a cold beverage from the handy 12-volt refrigerator no less. Try that in your BMW 540.
Features aside it's an impressive car mechanically. With variable control of both the intake and exhaust valves the variable-valve timing camshaft allows full access to the T6 engines 280 lb-ft of torque at a very low 1,800 rpm, accelerating the sedan in fine form while experiencing only moderate torque steer. Shifts are performed with alacrity either in drive or when manually operated via T6 equipped Geartronic mode. While it stops quickly it lacks brake feel, losing the sporting edge.. Just the same the suspension keeps the big sedan level even during panic stops, important for keeping the majority of each tire's contact patch connected to the pavement.
It also feels less 'planted' at high speed than most of its competitors and is a little soft around the edges when pushed through tight corners, with a vague steering response requiring too much input for my liking. That said it makes up for its wishy-washy manners with a commendably smooth and silent ride. Its engine is also eerily silent at idle, while the starter motor is nearly indistinguishable at start-up.
Its smooth, quiet character carries over well inside. The firm and supportive seats are covered in luxurious leather while authentic looking simulated wood accents, real burled walnut in the 75th Anniversary edition, are tastefully applied throughout. Metal trim pieces are jewel-like while all switchgear clicks with precise accuracy. The S60, like all current Volvos, is built to a new level of premium refinement.
