While not a sports car the HEMI equipped Ram's substantial power, class leading braking and impressive handling aid in hauling payloads and towing trailers. The HEMI adds 227 kg (500 lbs) to the 1500's Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) for a total of 6,352 kg (14,000 lbs) when compared to the old 5.9-L Magnum. Its Gross Trailer Weight Rating (GTWR) increases too, by 250 kg (550 lbs) to 4,174 kg (9,200 lbs). And as if the Ram 1500's additional payload and increased towing capacity isn't enough the new HEMI improves fuel economy over the 5.9-L by 10 percent while weighing 27 kg (60 lbs) less.

The Quad Cab makes for easy entry into the rear seats. All doors are standard size while the rear bench seat folds 60/40 for optimal passenger/cargo flexibility. The seats are attractive too, especially when trimmed in optional leather like in my Laramie test truck. Ram logos are branded into the seatbacks that, along with the seat cushions, incorporate a suede-like inset material. The seats are comfortable too, with multiple power actuated settings including lumbar support, plus heated cushions. As if the seat adjustability isn't enough, Dodge adds power adjustable pedals that work in concert with the adjustable steering column to optimize the driver's position - pretty slick stuff for a truck.

The $41,050 4WD Laramie edition is as well equipped as a luxury car, but at the same time is an exceptionally powerful and capable pickup truck. (Photo: Shawn Pisio, Canadian Auto Press)

Of course in Laramie trim the Ram 1500 is as well equipped as a luxury car, with power everything, leathers seats, woodgrain trim and an Infinity sound system. Short wheelbase models start at $41,050 while the same truck with a long wheelbase can be had for $605 more. Load it up with a box full of extras and it tops out below $50K at $48,575. While more than twice the price of a base model, it's more than twice the truck.

When all is said and done the Ram is no afterthought pickup truck. It's as bold as bold gets in this segment, but also as refined as any competitor. Together with its competitive price and stellar 7-year or 115,000 km powertrain warranty it's a truck to be reckoned with.
