The XL model is essentially a stretched Envoy (get it, XL, Extra Large?). A full 410 mm (16 in) has been added to the base Envoy, though the width and height have not changed, which is the real trick with this vehicle. What you get is a midsize SUV with an interior space akin to a full-size SUV (featuring comfortable seating for seven adults), yet with midsize maneuverability. One of my biggest dreads when piloting a full-size SUV is parking the beast, especially in mall parking lots where I find myself hard pressed to open the doors without hitting the vehicle beside me. The Envoy XL is still narrow enough to give sufficient space in tight spots, but the added length does make parallel parking a bit of a chore.

Also new for 2003 in the Envoy fleet is an available V8. My tester was outfitted with the powerplant, borrowed from GM's full-size SUV stable, and while was thirsty its 290 horses were much appreciated as we hauled our way to Castlegar. Even at a decent highway speed, there was plenty of oomph to pass the usual fifth-wheels and 18-wheelers that litter the road.

In addition to 2WD and 4WD options, the rear-wheel drive XL comes with two engine choices: the aforementioned 5.3-litre V8 and a 275 horsepower inline six. A four-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox available while antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and 17-inch alloy wheels are standard.
