Very little of the S-Type R's aggressive nature transcends to the inside, where rich leathers and opulent gray-colored bird's eye maple veneers grace every nook and cranny. All interior plastics have been upgraded since the new generation S-Type hit the scene in model year 2000 (actually the entire car is almost 70% new), more suitable to the marque's demanding clientele. Chrome plated accents highlight the interior door handles, glove box handle, shift lever and surrounding trim while deep luxurious carpets coddle the feet. Those in the back seat will experience a little more room than in previous S-Types but it is still only adequate for large adults. I suppose if you're looking for more passenger space you might consider the all-new XJ due to arrive for the 2004 model year.

Finding the perfect seating position is important in any car and even more crucial when pushing the high cornering g's that the S-Type R is capable of. The front seats are extremely comfortable with lumbar support equipped 16-way power adjustability but could use more lateral support during at-the-limit maneuvers. Still, I'm a little on the small size so most people should find the driver's seat comfort/sport compromise just right. Speaking of getting things just right the steering wheel has electrical tilt and telescopic adjustability and the well positioned pedals are power adjustable.

Other features include adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control with CFC-free air conditioning, heated front seats with 2-level temperature control, a leather-trimmed R-Performance steering wheel with audio and cruise buttons, plus a memory system that presets door mirrors, steering wheel, driver's seat and pedal settings. A multilingual message centre, trip computer, glass sunroof, power-adjustable heated door mirrors, power windows with one-touch up/down feature for all windows and a sensational 10-speaker 320-watt Alpine Audiophile sound system incorporating a single CD round out the package - a multi-disc dash-mounted CD player would be more appropriate.
