For all its high-zoot features, this audio system is pretty finicky to operate using normal controls on the head unit, not least because it had to be sized to fit in the standard space in the dash, but the included remote control makes the task a little easier. It doesn't sound quite as pure as the units in high-end luxury cars, but for the kind of music that will be played by most of the Speed's owners, its volume and bass response will be just the ticket. Completing the comfort and appearance story are firmer front seats with suede-like inserts, a leather-wrapped Nardi steering wheel, and unique front and rear fascia and side skirts.
During track testing, the speedy Protegé proved to be a blast, with neutral and predictable handling (for a front-wheel drive car) and the high limits of performance cars that cost twice as much. It is quite amazing what can be done with such a basic compact car platform. To perhaps split hairs, all one might wish for is a little more steering feel and feedback in the middle of fast corners. Having said that, the Speed turns in to tight corners well and carves a nice line through big corners.
Braking performance is firm and fade-free, although understandably not up to supercar standards. There are few small factory-built sporty cars that can keep up with the Speed - in the hands of a driver who can deal with the shortcomings inherent with its front-drive architecture.
