But even the comparatively paltry base E320 benefits from the new car's increased dimensions. The new E is approximately one inch (254 mm) larger than last year's car all round (length, wheelbase and height) so interior accommodations should be slightly improved. The front seats are large and comfortable, a Mercedes trait, but these go a step further in incorporating a myriad of sensors to measure occupant body size and weight, and then adjust their position automatically for optimal comfort. The sensors also relay information to Mercedes' new 'Smart Airbag' system. The E's trunk volume is up too, from 434 L (15.3 cu ft) to 450 (15.9 cu ft).
While racier looking and more powerful, the new E-Class probably won't be pulling too many customers away from rival BMW. People talk about their heated rivalry but most anyone who is loyal to either brand would hardly consider buying its 'nemesis', yet for different reasons than why an American would buy a Lincoln over a Cadillac. Mercedes and BMW have never deviated off their respective philosophical paths, attracting clients with altogether different sets of priorities. And that's a good thing as Mercedes-Benz wouldn't, and shouldn't even consider trying to emulate the Bavarian company at the loss of its own distinct attributes. Its driver's appreciate the brand's refined elegance, comfortable ambiance and unique features over BMW's purposeful simplicity and unparalleled handling. Still, future Mercedes E-Class sales could benefit by a disenfranchised group of conservative 5-Series owners if BMW follows the radical styling departure initiated by the latest 7 when the new model is unveiled for next year. Infiniti's new M45 could pose a small threat too, but probably more to BMW than Mercedes.
All in all the new E-Class exhibits a much more conservative approach to redesign than its German competitor, probably smart considering the model's importance in the overall M-B lineup. Everything is improved and once again it's ready to do battle in the hot midsize luxury category.
