Loafing along with the 5-speed auto in 5th gear at 100 km/h, the engine barely turns 2,500 rpm and all is quiet and 'fuss-less'. But nudge the accelerator pedal and the AT kicks down two gears quickly, lighting the GT's V6 'afterburners' as the car springs to life with zest and grip. The unequal length half shafts keep steering control sharp, with that satisfying push back into the seat as the car leaps forward. It's definitely not your mother-in-law's Camry! Mazda's imbued this sporty sedan with real performance capabilities and an "edgy" driving experience. Those may not be the average priorities in the family sedan sector, but with the 6, it appears you can have it both ways. Quiet cruiser or back road stormer - you decide.

I've left some of the best to last - design. The 6 has a lithe quality, the flanks pulled sharp and tight. There's a European boldness to the design that thumbs its nose at the slab-sided, big-bellied look of some of its competitors. It looks aggressive and fit, ready for action. Yet the stylists stopped short of giving the car that distinctive knockout punch to match its sporty credentials. Someone needs to entice a Nissan/Infiniti designer onto the Mazda team to dropkick the 6 those last 10 yards over the goal line. Because on every other criteria that counts in the family/sport sedan class - price, features, cargo and passenger carrying capacity, safety, performance, build quality and driving excitement - the Mazda6 GT V6 has arrived, and it's going to cost the competition sales and market share.
