Its ride is firmer than some of its peers, a positive thing when the road ahead begins to curve but not the best for

interstate travel with a trailer in back. This will be a personal taste issue, as some drivers prefer a firmer, more European ride to the velvety smooth, but often squishy suspensions of full-size GM SUVs for instance.

Under the aggressively styled sheetmetal is a fully boxed frame riding on a fully independent suspension. It also gets a highly sophisticated full-time automatic 4-wheel drive system that instantaneously sends torque to all four wheels when called upon. states its 4Lo crawl ratio is one of the best in the class, improving traction over rough terrain and the large SUVs hill descent capabilities. I didn't have the opportunity to test it off-road, but did slip it into bull low just to get a feel for how it works. There are no surprises here, as it's easy to engage or disengage and literally tugs the big SUV along without the need to even depress the throttle, the result of 385 lb-ft of torque.

A substantial 249 mm (9.8 in) of ground clearance should be ample for clearing large rocks and stumps, but if you misjudge the Armada comes equipped with heavy-duty skid plates for protecting the oil pan, fuel tank and transfer case if the Off-Road Package is purchased. The antilock brakes, standard equipment by the way, are tuned for off-road use too, improving braking effectiveness on slippery surfaces.
